How does the charm system work?
Charms are tapus's built-in currency – earned, not bought. Every time you complete an exchange (offering your skills, time, or goods to another Tapper), you receive a charm. You then can spend those charms to tap an offer from someone else in the community.
Is tapus free to join?
Yes, joining tapus is completely free. There are no membership fees, subscription costs, or hidden charges to create an account or participate in the community. tapus runs on a cash-free exchange model: instead of paying with money, you give and receive using charms, earned through your own skills, time, and generosity. Down the road, we may introduce an optional premium tier with additional features to enhance the experience – but the core platform will always be free to join and use.
Who can join the pilot?
The tapus pilot is open to anyone 18 or older living in or near Trumansburg and Ithaca, New York. We're starting local and community-focused so we can build trust, safety, and the tap/charm system thoughtfully before expanding to new regions – so if you're in the area, you're welcome to join.
What items can I offer and what can I not?
Every offer on tapus must originate from you – your natural talents, your time, your homemade gifts. Whether it is a skill you've mastered, an hour you can spare, or something you've made or grown yourself. Bought, resold, or secondhand goods do not qualify – if it did not come from your own hands, knowledge, or time, it isn't a tapus offer.
What if something goes wrong with an exchange?
If an exchange doesn't go as expected, you can report it directly through the app. Our trust & safety team reviews every report and works with both Tappers to understand what happened. If the exchange wasn't fulfilled fairly, your charms can be refunded so you're never left out of pocket. We built tapus around trust, but we know things can go wrong, and when they do, we're here to make it right.
